Bruges was for more than three
centuries one of the most important harbors in Northern Europe. The ships that sailed
along the 'Zwin' into Bruges, brought wealth and prosperity.
This resulted in rich architecture and interesting urbanization which still
remain today. Therefore Bruges is also called "Venice of the
North".
During
late medieval times, our neighborhood of 'St Walburga' was focused on
international trade since the harbor was very nearby. Many houses had a commercial
or business functions which is why many of them now have big rooms, spacious
cellars and huge lofts.
In the 16th century Bruges lost its
leading position in international trade in favor of Antwerp. This resulted in the houses
eventually becoming used for residential purposes, mostly by wealthy families.
Today 'St Walburga'
is still a residential area surrounded by many cultural and commercial
activities.
